Videography
This page will include videos taken in classrooms observations. See our form 20th vs 21st Century Classrooms for evidence to be observed. Also please see the video of a classroom we visited in India entitled "TGES TFU students explain", and compare it to the classrooms we saw in Malaysia. The class in India is an excellent example of a 21st century classroom in which thinking skills and other 21st century skills are abundantly in evidence.

Traditional classrooms in MalaysiaWe found classrooms in Malaysia to be teacher-centered, focusing on memorization and regurgitation of facts. There was no evidence of the teaching of 21st century skills, which include a variety of specifc thinking tools. BUT, there was evidence of possibilities!

Case Studies of Malaysian Classrooms
After observing 59 classrooms in 16 schools across the country we concluded that Malaysian education is undoubtedly not in the 21st century, and that dramatic changes must occur in this educational system if Malaysia is to achieve the goal of a leader among nations and a nation replete with thinkers, innovators and entrepreneurs. The majority of the classrooms observed were teacher-centered, lecture-based, textbook- and test-driven. The lessons were extremely basic and low level, and we saw virtually no evidence of 21st century thinking, skills or literacies. In short, Malaysian students are not learning, and without change they will be unable to compete or succeed as adults in the new millennium.
We begin with an example which compares and contrasts two classrooms in Malaysia. It just so happened that we were fortunate enough to see the same lessons being taught in different schools and got enough video (we did not videotape the entire class period) to demonstrate and support our conclusions. The lesson was on the Strength and Stability of a Structure. Video A below is a very typical example of teaching in Malaysia. Video B is the same content, but also demonstrates that there is readiness and room for real change. We are including other evidence that Malaysian teachers are ready for change by highlighting the few classrooms we found that were moving toward being 21st century classrooms. We observed 3 such classrooms out of 59 - the videos from two of these classes are Strength of a Structure B and Natural Disaster Research.
